Max just had his 19th B-day on Dec 7, 2004. He was born in Oxford England) and from day one was pretty laid back, though of course that's all relative to what young Goldens are like. He loves to eat...lives to eat? His diet consists of table scraps and kibble, and biscuits that the patrons at the cafe next door buy for him. He still has all his teeth, but can only hear the sound of the food dish it seems....selective hearing. He is the greeter at our business, WildWays Adventure Sports in Christina Lake, BC and is known to many of the customers who return each year and look around for him, especially the children. Everyone remarks "Is he still going? I can't believe it!". And frankly, we can't either. This winter will probably be his last, as his hips are starting to go, but that's really only happened over the last year.

The Cafe next door, Jimmy Beans, had a 19th B-day party for him, invited people with all his doggy friends and made a chicken & cheese cake for them, with pepperoni candles. They "bobbed for sausages" in a tub of water, but Max has never been a big water dog (Yes I know....he's supposed to love water) so he decided it was best to just drink all the water until he could get to the sausages w/o getting his face wet. Needless to say he is a bit of a celebrity in our small community. If you're coming through the Kootenays in southern British Columbia stop by and we'll chew the bone!

Bob & Lucinda

Update: Max passed away in June of 2005. He was 19 1/2 years old.

I am crying as I am writing this. I just put down my beloved Max, because he had metastatic cancer to both lungs. He was so stoic and endured so much pain. My vet insisted it was arthritis but after bringing him to another vet on saturday, the diagnosis was made. Not only was he in pain moving, but he lost almost 20 pounds and his breathing was very labored. I could not watch him suffer, and it upsets me that my own vet did not make the diagnosis.

Max was a beautiful red headed golden. He had a brother Rocky. Rocky is still alive, and not only is he grieving, but the poor baby is blind.

I bought max and rocky when I was single and lonely. They traveled with me everywhere. From 5 star hotels in san diego, to the colorado mountains. Max and rocky loved each other so much.Max was a great swimmer. He could get 4 tennis balls in his mouth at once! He also loved the snow. What he loved more than anything, food and people!

I now have 2 kids, 6 and 3 yo, and he loved them so much. My daughter really misses him !

I did not know that it was cancer until 2 days ago (even though my vet kept telling me it was arthritis). Once I found out how sick he was and I saw his agony, I had to put him down. I am so heartbroken , but I know he is not suffering anymore. Other than my kids and rocky, he was the love of my life. God please let my maxie rest in peace. The you max for the wonderful 11years and 4 months. The time was way too short. Goldens are a wonderful gift from God

Hi everyone. My golden is named Zekey and he is almost 14 years old and in good shape so far. The vet is amazed at the shape he is in for his age. I hope and pray that he continues to be in good health and lives for many more years. He amazes myself and everyone that he comes in contact with how smart he is.An example is the command 'shake'. He knows when you want him to shake leaves, etc.off or shake hands. I would like to start a pet hospice so people like ourselves can choose to have their pet pass away at home with dignity and in familiar surroundings. If anyone has any ideas on how to do this I would appreciate it.

I am reading about your golden retriever even though he passed a year ago. I am sorry for your loss. I have to put my german sheppard-collie cross down next week. He is 18 years old and it is going to kill me to do it. It is not just a dog but apart of your family. Lori N. Nebrasks USA

I found this precious website about goldens. I also have recently lost our beloved Molly. She was by best friend. As i read these stories i started to cry with you all. All of our grief's are so hard sometimes to handle. She had her own bed that i had to fix every night for her, she had to have her 'quilt" laid down and her big bunnie for her pillow and a small kitty toy. After she laid down i would cover her up with her small "quilt". I would pat her behind and she would go to sleep. My heart aches so bad sometimes. Even tho i have two other dogs, she was my heart. I love her and miss her beyond words. I understand all of your sorrows. God bless and we'll see them in Heaven.

How lucky you are to have been able to enjoy your Max. I just lost my beautiful golden T.J. two short weeks ago. It is difficult waking up each day without her. She was a little over 10 years old, too young to go, in my opinion. She was epileptic but had been seizure free for the last 3 years of her life. She gave me so much joy through the years. As human dog lovers we know our pets will outlive us, but it's so worth the happiness while they are living. I will get another one of these days, to love and care for again.

I lost my 11 year old GR, Doobie on 3/28/07. I am sick with grief. He was the most gentle, good natured creature that I ever encountered. He had mast cell cancer. In July I had his toe amputated but unfortunately it had spread to his lymph nodes. He took a terrible turn for the worse on 3/27 and on 3/28 I had him put to sleep to take him out of his pain. I am lost without him. In time I will get another Golden.

We lost our wonderful boy, Oliver, on March 25. I cannot express the pain we are going through. He was two weeks past 15 1/2 when we had to put him down. The decision was so very difficult. It is so hard to know when it is time. When things went down hill, they went quickly. The last straw was when he just couldn't get up, and stay up anymore. He looked at us as if he was saying I can't take this anymore. We will miss him but know that he is much happier now. He was our second golden, and in due time, we will get another. Goldens are the best dogs----they are part of your soul.

You are so blessed to have had that much time with your beautiful boy. I lost my beautiful boy, Teddy on March 27th. He was 13 and one month. The house seems so empty. He was dignosed with histiocytic sarcoma. He had a large tumor on his back leg. He really had trouble walking at the end. He had one dose of chemotherapy and the tumor almost completely disappeared in a very short time. The only problem is that his cbc revealed anemia and low red blood cell count. When he dided, the vets said the cancer had spread. But I found on the web that all of his symptoms were due to results of the chemo. He could have been given an antibiotic as a precaution and then he would have been fine because I think he really died of pneumonia and a severe bladder infection. I miss him sooooooo much. He was the perfect dog in every way.

What a heartwarming Golden tale! I just lost my third Golden, Ben, on St. Patties day to cancer. He was 10.5 yrs young and I really thought he would be around for at least a couple more years. I kept his weight down, and he swam and chased balls regularly, including the day before he laid down for the last time. Given the choice between a ball and food he would always go for the ball first. It gets harder and harder to lose these guys. I don't know if I can go through it again, as much as I would love another one. I thought that they should have buried me with Looie, Ben's predecessor, and then Ben came along, but the grief this time is really overwhelming. I just wonder what it is with cancer and these guys. Looie went the same way at 11. They both were on Thyroxin most of they're lives and Ben got 2 aspirin a day as well. He had a bad shoulder since he was a pup. They were both very dignified in death, as if they didn't want to cause any more problems for anyone than absolutely necessary. I joined this site the day I knew he was going and it has been very therapeutic for me. Thanks to everyone involved.

we're now on our third golden and like max none were/are fans of the water. loosing a golden is acutely painful but loving a golden makes one able to withstand the pain. every golden we have had has been very different but they just keep getting better and better. If the world were made of goldens war, crime, disaster and most misery would be avoided. my goldens have taught me how to live, to love to laugh and to appreciate. every look at their innocent brings an amazing joy to the human heart. if you cant love a golden forget about ever falling in love.

I recently lost my 14 year old golden Jeb to cancer. Thank God he passed on his own and without much pain. He was my pride and joy.

Given to me when I was seriously ill he nursed me back to health. I wouldn't be on this computer right now, if it were not for him.

I cannot express the loss and grief I and my family is now dealing with at this moment.

Our golden is 13 years old. I have had dogs all my life;big, small, mutts and akc but our GR Jo-jo is the best dog we have ever had. So loving and gentle. My question is when do you know when you should let them be put to sleep? Jo-jo still has a good appetiate, Can see and hear fine. He has all of his teeth but he has trouble getting up from lying down and he also has a lot of trouble walking on any uncarpeted area. We have throw rugs all over but still he slips and falls. He seems to be aging right before our eyes, and yet he still greets us with a tail wag and a hug. How do you know when its time?

My GR just turned 3 in March. Her name is Baby. She truly is my baby. I can see clear to her sole when I look in those beautiful brown eyes. I cannot imagine life without her. I fear it so much it makes me short of breath. I know someday it will come. I thank everyone for their comments regarding this article. It helps to know others feel the same as I and my family do about our Golden. I am 37 years old and have wanted a GR all my life. I finally got Baby in 2005 and I hate the fact that I waited nearly half my life to get her. I will NEVER be without a Golden again. I will have one in my life from now until I leave this earth. I take comfort in knowing that my baby girl will meet Max someday, as I am sure he is a SuperStar in doggy heaven. Thanks so much for the story. :)

From reading all your comments it's for sure we are all Golden Retriever lovers. Max looks fabulous and no one would guess he was 19. Our beautiful English golden just turned 7, we don't know how we ever got along without him as he is the love of our family. Because of our Trevor we know we would never want to be without a dog so we asked the vet for a suggestion. He suggested we get another puppy when Trevor turned 7 so he would still like playing with all that energy and would have a companion if we leave, which isn't very often, at least without him or one of us at home. Since I started looking on the internet for information just this week, when I am home from work, Trevor will not leave my side even though my husband is with him always. Do you think he is telling me something? What is your opinion about introducing another dog to a family that is so in love with the one they already have?

Ben is our beautiful Golden although he is definitely his 'Daddy’s Doggy'. He is just 12 and we cannot wait to arrive home to see him. Since Ben has come to live with us we have had such fun with him. Ben loves to greet his Daddy every morning with his chatter and his Daddy 'chatters' back to him. Quite a conversation they have going. I love to see it and try to chatter to him but he saves it mostly for his Daddy. He loves people, especially Children. He loves ball games of which we play daily with him. We give him lots of love and attention when we come home. He has three teddy bears (a few are now retired and sit and watch over him) he has three Giraffes, one in particular goes everywhere with him, he has a Mickey Mouse from Florida, and his friends have bought him so many toys that he has his own toy box.

He loves playing in the water, bath time, playing in the rivers and we have taken him to the beach, and he really loves that. He loves the snow. The first time he tried to eat it all and then roll in the rest.

He has a pal in the village a black Labrador, a puppy to Ben, but they have a wonderful time together, especially when he comes to stay. The first week-end they were together we came down the following morning and it looked like they needed matchsticks to hold their eyelids open. I think they had stayed up all night. After that they were fine and settled into their routine. I would say goodnight and in the morning they had swapped beds.

Ben is a rescue and are we glad he is with us. He is so handsome. My office has photos of us all together; he's my screen saver, my phone image. When we go on holiday, I bought his daddy the same Giraffe as Ben has and I pack the Giraffe wherever we go and we cannot wait to come home and pick him up. This year he gets his own passport so we can holiday together.

He is such a joy. He has changed our lives... for the better. We cannot imagine life without him, but we know what it may feel like. One night we came home, it was 2 weeks before bonfire night, and we live in a quite place, the back door was shredded and Ben had vanished. Our friends came over and we searched everywhere. At 5 the following morning still no sign of him. I made a 'Lost' poster and by lunchtime we had him back home thanks to the wonderful neighbours and grapevine. What a scare we both had.

He has a lovely nature and we love him to bits. He is now our boy and we cherish him beyond belief.

How fortunate you were to have your precious dog for so long. Our Lucy is 2 days away from her 14th birthday, and I feel like she is living on borrowed time. After hearing Max's story, however, maybe she will still be with us for a while. The vet told us in July that she has a large tumor on her spleen and would not be with us much longer, but so far she has proven him wrong. Whether we have her for two more days, or two more years, she will always be part of our family. In just two weeks, we will be brining home a second golden to love. We hope Lucy doesn't mind. The puppy can learn a lot from her.

We recently lost our beautiful giant golden (113 lbs and very tall, he could rest his head on the kitchen table) to cancer. I took him to the vet in October, 2007 because I found a lump on his neck. He had been getting treated for eye allergies that the vet really could not find a reason for so I initially thought the lump was an infection. When the vet felt it, he started to cry. He had the fluid from the lump tested and we found out our beautiful seven year old baby dog had maybe six weeks to live. He held on for eleven weeks, smiling and playing the entire time. When he started bleeding profusely from his nose, we knew it was time for him to leave us. We are having an incredibly difficult time - we miss him so much. Seven years was such a short time.

How wonderful to have Max for so long and he was in fab shape just like our Goldie was!
Bless you for taking care of him to help him live so long. He was gorgeous.
We adopted Goldie in July 2003 and we knew nothing about the Goldens and we just loved him and gave him all our time and attention, he was such a happy and super active dog. He was so affectionate and adored hugs and kisses. He never wanted to be apart from us!
Then on 2005 he developed heart problems and our vet started him on medication which gave him a new lease of life.
However, we had to stop taking him for walks and that really broke my heart! I missed taking him to the beach and forest everyday! Then in summer 2007 he suddenly started having problems with his hind legs he got stiffer as the summer past and just after Christmas 2007 he had suddenly got really poorly, we had to carry him in and out and spoon feed him! He still had his amazing bright wide eyes and his hearing was perfect but he was so poorly, he looked so tired and lost, we decided to have him euthanized! It has been the most difficult thing Ive ever done in my life but we couldn't watch him suffer! He died on 7th Jan aged 17 going into his 18th year and although we only owned him for a few years he was really special and he was a massive part of our life, I have been ill with M.E and he stayed with me day and night, he was my greatest friend, I called him my baby boy. I miss him so much, I cry everyday wishing I could have him back!
What a wonderful breed, I'm not ready to get another one but someday I will adopt another Golden.
The man who first bred the Goldens said " He was out to breed the Perfect Dog" I think he did a great job, theres no perfect dog like the Golden Retriever xox

Hi to all, i've just got another golden, male, and I have another female that is 6. The male is a puppy, he is just adorable, My son introduce me to goldens 6 years ago and i have fallen in love with the breed. My choice to get another was because the older dog seemed lonely and I wanted her to have a companion. I have been thinking about getting one for a few years. Then the opportunity arise and i went for it. I truly believe when we lose our dogs in the end and for whatever time we had with them, we appreciate it. I also belive there are other goldens waiting for your love and a good home. I'm single and honestly having the puppy and my older dog, makes it more fun to come home.

I have had my Golden for over 8 years and she is truly the most lovable Dog and appreciative of everything I do for her. She constantly shows her love and affection when I come home by whinning and wagging her tail and waiting for my hugs.I've had other breeds in my lifetime and loved them all, but there is something very special about the Golden Retriever breed. They love you
and express it all the time. They are simply irresistable, and the way they stare into your eyes with that lovable look on their face. They almost smile.

Its been one year ago when we discovered our Harley age four was diagnosed with IMHA. My wife and I were and still are devestated after having him put to sleep acspecially at the holidays. I have had dogs in the past but there is nothing like owning a golden. They are the most humanistic four legged companion you could ever have. I have attempted to get another golden but my wife is still so heart broken that she said she couldn't go through the pain again knowing the poor health history prevelant with these dogs. Even though the odds are stacked I would in a heartbeat adopt another golden. After reading all the comments it is comforting to know that others understand and express the same feelings that we have. Godbless to all you and have a safe and happy holiday.

We lost Wrigley 13+ yrs old female golden a year ago and are still struggling with her loss. She lost her sight, had trouble hearing and her hips failed her. The last few months of her life we had to carry her about. She would chew on my socks leaving a tiny hole that used to drive me crazy. Now I wear such a sock with much joy. It's funny how your perspective changes when you lose someone, yes she was a person in a fuzzy suit, that close to you. We're just now starting to think about another dog. Nothing can replace our Wrigley but it's a very empty house without those nails clicking on the wood floors. It will be a little more time before we're ready, but the only breed we'll consider is a golden.

There can be no greater experience than sharing your life with a golden!! This is why the end is so damn hard. My husband and I lost our Meggie six weeks ago due to kidney failure and it broke our hearts. Not a day goes by that we don't cry over her. There is no other breed that is as loveable, gentle, biddable or just so darn special. Max was really exceptional!

I have an 11 month old Golden. I just lost my 14+ Golden in Nov. Buddy had fibrosarcoma and his hips went. It was the most painful thing I ever did was saying Good Bye to such a great friend. Buddy was loyal, always happy and a real trooper.I will always miss him. Max is awesome. I hope I have my 11 month old Golden for many many years. What a wonderful breed!!!!
